What small caps are (and the one missing letter)

Real small caps come from the Phonetic and Latin Extended blocks of Unicode, where letters like ᴀ, ʙ, ᴄ and ᴅ were defined for linguistics long before social media adopted them as a style. Converted text mixes those genuine small-capital characters into words that read as calm, deliberate typography — no shouting, all structure.

One honest gap: Unicode has no small-capital X, so X stays a normal lowercase x in every small caps generator, including this one. Q uses ꞯ, a small capital added in a later Unicode version — on very old phones it may show as a box, the only letter in the set with that risk.

Where small caps work best

  • Bio lines and taglines — brands, studios and creators who want a label, not a headline.
  • Section labels in captions — ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴇᴛᴀɪʟꜱ, ᴡʜᴀᴛ ɪ ᴡᴏʀᴇ, ʀᴇᴄɪᴘᴇ — like magazine kickers.
  • Discord and Roblox names — distinctive without symbol clutter.
  • Paired with superscript — small caps for the label, tiny text for the footnote.

Frequently asked questions

Is small caps the same as typing in lowercase?

No. Lowercase letters have different shapes (a, e, g especially). Small caps use miniature capital letterforms — compare "studio" with "ꜱᴛᴜᴅɪᴏ" and the difference is obvious.

Why does the letter X look different?

Unicode simply never defined a small-capital X character, so generators fall back to a plain x. It blends in because x is nearly symmetrical between cases.

Do numbers work in small caps?

There are no small-cap digits in Unicode, so numbers pass through unchanged — which looks natural, like old-style figures in printed books.

Small caps vs superscript — which should I use?

Small caps sit on the baseline and read like normal text, just smaller — best for labels. Superscript (tiny) letters float above the baseline and suit decorative bios and footnotes rather than readable labels.
