Where Discord fonts work
Your username (the unique lowercase ID) is restricted to plain characters — Discord enforces that so people can add the right person. Everything people actually see can be styled: your display name, your nickname in each server, your custom status and your About Me. Channel and category names are usually typed in small caps or with symbols by server admins — note that voice channel names in fancy text can confuse bots and screen readers, so many servers keep those plain.
Server-tested style advice
- Chat readability: bold, sans bold and small caps survive small font sizes and dark mode best.
- Personality: script for soft servers, fraktur and double-struck for gaming clans, frames (꧁༺ ༻꧂,) for role names and channel headers.
- Mentions: extremely exotic names are hard to type and hard to search in the member list — if people can't find you, they can't ping you. Keep at least a recognisable core word in your name.
Moderators in large servers sometimes ask members to keep names typeable, and a few servers run bots that flag names made entirely of symbols. A styled-but-readable name keeps everyone happy.

How do I set a fancy Discord display name?

Can I style my actual Discord username?
No. Usernames must be lowercase plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods. The display name is the one shown in chat, and that one styles freely.
Do fancy names work in Discord status?
Yes — custom status text and About Me are plain text fields, so pasted styles show up directly. Short script or small-caps status lines are the most common.
Why do some styles look like boxes on Discord mobile?
The phone's system fonts are missing those glyphs. Desktop Discord covers more styles than older phones; bold, fraktur and small caps are safe bets.
